Setting/genre: real world, present day. Presumably somewhere in the English-speaking parts of the world, although maybe we’ll find out different.

Your object should be unusual in at least some way. See jes’ initial item, a Hairbrush – “an object that is highlighted by its banality (a quality not shared by anything else in the collection).”
